The Ruins campaign closed last night at $15,314 from 409 readers.

THANK YOU SO MUCH! The authors and I all feel so incredibly grateful for your support.

There’s much work to do in the days ahead—finalizing production, proofing the print copies, and delivering the books into your hands.

I’m ready for it. This expedition is fully outfitted and underway.

I’ll keep you updated as I go along.

Don’t hesitate to reach out with questions here on Kickstarter or by sending me a message through MGHerron.com.

Best,

Hey explorers,

Mission accomplished! Every stretch goal for Ruins has been unlocked.

That means every backer is walking away with more than they signed up for—and the hardback just got even more deluxe.

Here’s what we’ve unlocked together:

📚 Six bonus e-books from our contributing authors
🏅 Two new mission badge sticker designs for all print backers
✍️ Four new spot illustrations in every deluxe book
💸 Bonus payment to all anthology authors
✨ Sprayed edges + black ribbon bookmark

Plus, the surprise bonus items:

⌛ Time Capsule—thirteen authors’ predictions for the year 3000
🪐 Early consideration for Gates story submissions from backers

This is what happens when a community of sci-fi readers comes together to co-create a book worthy of its spot on the shelf.

The campaign closes tomorrow, Tuesday, March 10th at 11pm CST. If you haven’t backed yet, or want to upgrade your pledge, now’s the time: mgherron.com/ruins

Thank you for helping make this anthology one for the galactic history books.

All the best,

Gates anthology is open to submissions! (Plus a surprise bonus for backers)
about 2 months ago – Wed, Mar 04, 2026 at 07:59:09 AM

Now that Ruins is locked in, I’ve got a fun surprise to announce.

Gates is open for submissions.

This is my next space opera anthology, and it’s centered around the concept of ring gates, or wormholes, for space travel.

Here’s the blurb:

WANTED: Space opera stories about stargates, wormholes, and portals to the unknown

Who built them? Nobody knows. Where do they go? Only one way to find out.

Scattered across the galaxy—orbiting dead stars, buried in the hearts of nebulae, drifting silent at the edge of known space—are gates.

Rings of impossible geometry. Tunnels punched through the fabric of spacetime. Doorways that shouldn’t exist.

And yet, there they are.

We’re seeking bold tales of what happens when humanity steps through.

Your story might follow a lone starfighter pilot who stumbles onto an ancient ring gate and can’t resist the pull. Or a salvage crew that accidentally triggers a wormhole and finds themselves somewhere very far from home. Or a first contact team that realizes—too late —that the gate wasn’t abandoned. It was waiting.

Think Stargate meets Robert A. Heinlein. Classic sci-fi adventure DNA paired with the primal thrill of crossing a threshold into the unknown—on a cosmic scale.

A special bonus for backers

If you’re a writer and that appeals to you, here’s where it gets interesting.

Any backer who submits a story to Gates gets bumped to the top of the slush pile. Backer stories will be first on my reading list.

I’ll also leave editorial comments in your manuscript and send feedback via email—whether your story is accepted or not.

Thanks, as always, for reading.
